Terrebonne Parish, LA Landscaping Rules: Tree Removal & Heritage Trees (2026)

Parish Code § 2-545 sets a flat permit requirement: no person shall remove or otherwise disturb any street tree or park tree without first procuring a permit from the department of planning and zoning. Section 2-547 lays out the process. Applications must be made not less than 48 hours in advance of the time the work is to be done. The department issues the permit if, in its judgment, the proposed work is desirable and the proposed method and workmanship are satisfactory; any permit issued is void if its terms are violated.

Notice of completion must be given within 5 days to the department of planning and zoning. A person subject to these requirements may request a waiver from the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, which requires a written recommendation approved by majority vote of the parish tree board; the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government itself is exempted from the permitting and enforcement provisions of the article. Removal work also intersects with § 2-541, which gives the parish tree board authority to recommend removal of any street tree that is unsafe or injurious to sewers, power lines, gas lines, water lines or other public improvements, or affected by injurious fungus, insects or other pests.
