San Diego County requires clearing combustible weeds and brush near structures. The Defensible Space Ordinance bans letting flammable vegetation accumulate within 100 feet of any improvement.
Under the county's Defensible Space for Fire Protection Ordinance, no responsible party may permit combustible vegetation, dead or dying trees, green waste, or rubbish to accumulate within 100 feet of the exterior of any improvement, though the Fire Warden may reduce that distance to no less than 30 feet. Accumulated combustible vegetation is declared a public nuisance the Fire Warden may abate under the County's Public Nuisance Abatement Procedure.
The Fire Warden may declare a nuisance, order abatement, and if the owner fails to comply, clear the vegetation and recover costs as a special assessment or lien on the parcel.
