Full Breakdown

San Diego County Code SEC. 68.404 prohibits a responsible party from permitting any accumulation of combustible vegetation, dead/dying trees, green waste, rubbish or other flammable materials within 100 feet of any improvement (Fire Warden may reduce to no less than 30 feet), within 30 feet of a property line where it endangers a neighbor's defensible space, and within 10 feet of roads and driveways. SEC. 68.406 requires removal by mowing/cutting/grazing, with the height of weeds and annual grasses not exceeding six inches. 'Combustible vegetation' includes dry grass, brush, weeds and litter (SEC. 68.402). Note: purely aesthetic overgrown lawns are a civil matter the County does not enforce.

Violations & Fines

Overgrowth endangering property or neighbors is a public nuisance (SEC. 68.405); the Fire Warden may abate under SEC. 16.201. Uncollected abatement costs become a special-assessment lien on the tax bill.
