Freehold Township, NJ Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Section 245-2A is a duty imposed on 'the owner, tenant or person in possession of any dwelling or lands in the Township,' part of Chapter 245's Article I, Removal of Grass, Weeds, Brush and Other Debris, originally adopted August 8, 1966 and amended through Ord. No. O-95-14. The 30-inch cap is the only numeric height standard in the Township's landscaping rules, and it is targeted, not blanket: it applies specifically to growth within 10 feet of any roadway, and within 25 feet of the intersection of two roadways, and only where cutting it is 'necessary and expedient for the preservation of public safety,' which in practice means sight-line and visibility concerns at driveways and corners.

The companion Section 245-2B imposes a broader, non-numeric duty to keep all lands free of brush, weeds, and 'grass of unreasonable height' generally, wherever that growth is inimical to public health, safety, or welfare, or constitutes a fire hazard, but it does not attach a specific inch measurement the way Section 245-2A does. Enforcement for either subsection runs through the Code Enforcement Officer's complaint-driven notice process in Section 245-3: a written notice gives the owner between 72 hours and 10 days to cut or clear the growth, and if the same property has a second violation within six months, the officer can skip the notice period entirely and issue an immediate abatement order or summons.

If the condition is not corrected, the Township can perform the work itself and place a lien on the property for the cost, per Section 245-4.
