Long Branch, NJ Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

City of Long Branch Code § 125-1C sets a flat citywide height cap: "Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in Subsections A and B, it shall be the duty of the owner, tenant or person in possession of any lands in the city to keep all grass cut to a height of not more than 12 inches on any property in the city." The word "notwithstanding" matters: this 12-inch grass rule applies regardless of the separate roadway-vegetation and fire-hazard standards in the rest of § 125-1, so it reaches maintained residential and commercial lawns, not just brush along roads.

Article II of the same chapter, §§ 125-4 through 125-7, separately adopts the state's "Weed Control Code of New Jersey (1953)" by reference under N.J.S.A. 26:3-69.1 et seq., declaring ragweed and poison ivy public nuisances subject to removal and cost recovery. Section 125-7 locally amends the adopted code's Section 4.1 to name the enforcing officials: "members of the Police Department, the Construction Code Official or building official, the Plumbing Inspector, the Health Officer and any other official authorized by the City Council." Three copies of the adopted 1953 Weed Control Code are kept on file with the City Clerk for public inspection under § 125-6.
