Hamilton, NJ Landscaping Rules: Weed Ordinances (2026)

Hamilton's grass and weed height limit sits inside § 268-11C, Disposal of garbage and trash; outside maintenance; parking of vehicles, part of Chapter 268, Housing Standards. The subsection lists a long roster of prohibited yard debris, including boxes, barrels, sticks, stones, bricks, old furniture, unused vehicles and boats, auto parts, old tires, filth, junk, rubbish, and old lumber unless neatly stacked at least eight inches above the ground, before adding the height cap: the grass or weeds on the premises may not attain a growth of more than 10 inches.

The same subsection requires that shrubs and flowering woody plants be kept under control and not be allowed to grow beyond the boundaries of the premises, and that sheds, toolhouses, and outbuildings be kept aesthetically acceptable or demolished. A separate chapter, Chapter 362, Property Maintenance, layers on additional yard-vegetation duties: § 362-1 requires owners and tenants to keep land free of brush, weeds, and invasive plants where they pose a fire or health hazard, and specifically regulates invasive bamboo, requiring it be kept at least 40 feet from any public roadway and contained with root barriers.

Under §§ 362-2 and 362-3, the Township's enforcement officer can order an owner to clear overgrowth within 10 business days of written notice, whether the complaint comes from a resident or the officer's own inspection, and can have the Department of Public Works do the work and bill the cost as a lien on the property if the owner does not comply.
