Suffolk County maintains an expanding bicycle-route network that includes on-road bike lanes on county roads, multi-use paths along parkways, and the Long Island Greenway and Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway corridors.
The Suffolk County Department of Public Works maintains striped bicycle lanes on selected county roadways and partners with NYS DOT on parkway-adjacent paths along Sunrise Highway and Ocean Parkway. The County Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan prioritizes greenway connections including the Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway, the Pine Barrens Trail system, and the Greenbelt Trail. Cyclists must follow NY Vehicle and Traffic Law Articles 34 and 34-A, including use of the rightmost lane and yielding to pedestrians on shared paths. E-bikes Class 1 and 2 are permitted; Class 3 may be restricted on greenways.
Cycling violations follow NY VTL fines, typically 25 to 150 dollars; motorist offenses against cyclists in marked lanes carry enhanced penalties under NYS VTL.
