North Hempstead, NY Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Section 15 of the Uniform Traffic Code of the Town of North Hempstead sets out the general stopping, standing and parking prohibitions that apply in the town's unincorporated areas, meaning the neighborhoods outside the roughly thirty incorporated villages that sit inside the town and run their own codes. Subsection B lists eleven specific bans, from double parking and blocking a crosswalk to stopping on railroad tracks. Item B(11), added by Local Law No. 9-2014 on June 10, 2014, adds bicycle lanes to that list: no person may stop, stand or park a vehicle on any bicycle lane or portion of one.

The ban runs at all times, not only during posted hours, and the only exceptions written into Section 15 are stopping to avoid a traffic conflict, following a police officer's directions or an official traffic-control device, or complying with signs, markings or parking meters that indicate otherwise. The bicycle lane ban sits beside the town's other absolute stopping bans in the same subsection, including no double parking, no stopping on a sidewalk or crosswalk, no stopping within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, and no parking more than 12 inches from the curb, all enforced under the same fine schedule.

Because the Traffic Code is adopted town-wide as a single General Code publication rather than street by street, the ban covers every marked bicycle lane in the unincorporated area without a separate designation ordinance for each one. The Nassau County Police Department, or the Port Washington Police Department inside the Port Washington Police District, issues the summonses.
