North Hempstead, NY Parking Rules: EV Charging (2026)

Section 70-203, subsection X, splits electric vehicle charging into two tracks. For commercial properties, charging stations are permitted in all commercial districts, but each station must include vehicle impact protection such as bollards or a similar structure. The greater of two spaces or 10% of total provided parking may be designated exclusively for EV charging and electricity sale, and those spaces still count toward the off-street parking requirements of § 70-103; components of the charging equipment itself may encroach up to 36 inches into a required setback or buffer.

The second track, "electric vehicle charging station capable," reaches new construction before chargers are even installed: new parking garages and new or expanded parking lots (expansion meaning a 20% or greater increase in spaces) with 10 or more spaces must install conduit and pull wire sized for future charging equipment covering 10% of the total spaces, covering both commercial properties and multiple-unit residences. New detached one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses with on-site parking must provide for a 208- or 240-volt, minimum 40-amp circuit for future car charging, including a 1 1/2-inch-diameter conduit run from the service panel to the garage or parking area, unless the main service panel is already located in the garage. 2, reflecting the Town's stated policy of speeding these projects through.
