North Hempstead, NY Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 16 of the Uniform Traffic Code of the Town of North Hempstead, amended by Local Law No. 17-1998 and Local Law No. 9-1999, sets two separate commercial-parking bans. First, no person may park a commercial vehicle at any time on the streets or portions of streets listed in Schedule XII, filed as Section TC12-56A. on any street or part of a street within any residence district shown on the town's Building Zone Map, covering essentially every residential block in the unincorporated town regardless of whether that block appears on Schedule XII.

The section defines "commercial vehicle" by New York State plate class rather than by vehicle size or use: any vehicle carrying apportioned, bus, taxi, T&LC, farm, livery, school, tow truck, tractor, trailer, special commercial or commercial plates, or the equivalent plate class from another state, district, territory or country, qualifies. A driver whose personal pickup truck carries ordinary passenger plates falls outside the ban regardless of size; a landscaper's truck registered on commercial plates does not, even if parked briefly. The rule applies only in the unincorporated areas of the town, outside the roughly thirty incorporated villages that maintain their own codes.

Commercial vehicles left in violation for more than 48 consecutive hours can also be immobilized by the Department of Public Safety under Section 38D, with a $250 charge for each 24-hour period the immobilization device stays on the vehicle.
