Alpharetta, GA Mobility & Curb Rules: E-Bike Classes (2026)

The City of Alpharetta regulates electric bicycles in its parks by class rather than banning e-bikes outright. Sec. 32-4(a)(4) generally prohibits bicycle use on sidewalks and trails inside city parks, then carves out class 1 and class 2 electric bicycles by name: those two classes, along with ordinary pedal bicycles, may be ridden on the Greenway, the AlphaLoop, marked roads, driveways, and parking areas at a maximum speed of 15 miles per hour. A separate carve-out lets children under six ride bikes with training wheels on park trails when an adult accompanies them, but that exception is not tied to electric bicycles specifically.

Class 3 electric bicycles receive the opposite treatment. Sec. 32-4(a)(3)c groups them with golf carts, ATVs, LSVs, PTVs, motorized scooters, motorized skateboards, and hover boards on a list of devices prohibited on the Greenway, the AlphaLoop, or any other park trail, without a permit exception or a speed-limited allowance. The distinction tracks the state's three-tier e-bike classification: class 1 and 2 bikes are pedal-assist or throttle-assist machines capped at 20 miles per hour, while class 3 bikes can assist up to 28 miles per hour, which is the likely reason Alpharetta draws the line where it does inside its trail network.

Sec. 32-4(c) applies the same enforcement scheme to both provisions: city law enforcement officers, city officials, and other city officers enforce compliance, and Sec. 32-4(c)(3) makes a violation of either rule a misdemeanor, fined under Sec. 1-8 or punished with up to 45 days of supervised labor on city public works instead.
