Fort Collins, CO Mobility & Curb Rules: Red-Light Cameras (2026)

Under Traffic Code § 615(1), Police Services may deploy AVIS cameras at signalized intersections to catch drivers who enter on a red signal in violation of Section 604(1)(c). A warning sign must be posted 200 to 500 feet before each camera in letters at least four inches tall (§ 615(3)). Registered owners get a mailed notice of violation within 30 days (60 if out of state) and have at least 45 days to pay the $75 civil penalty or request a Municipal Court hearing before a final order of liability enters (§ 615(4)).

Section 1106 extends AVIS to speed enforcement in school zones, residential blocks posted 35 mph or under, marked construction or repair zones, streets bordering a City park, and any corridor Council designates by ordinance; the City must post permanent signs 300 feet before the corridor and before each camera and coordinate with CDOT or the Colorado State Patrol before activating it (§ 1106(1)-(5)). The standard speed-camera penalty tops out at $40, doubling to $80 inside a school or repair zone, and no ticket issues for driving under 10 mph over the limit (§ 1106(10)).

Drivers going 25 mph or more over the limit are served in person instead of by mail and are not covered by either dollar cap (§ 615(8); § 1106(11)). Neither system triggers Department of Motor Vehicles points, and unpaid fines cannot be enforced by immobilizing the vehicle (§ 615(10)-(11); § 1106(12)-(13)). Camera photos and video are exempt from Colorado Open Records Act disclosure and must be destroyed within three years of final disposition (§ 615(15); § 1106(17)).
