The noise from any single piece of equipment is measured against the applicable zone standard. Section 12.08.430 specifically addresses stationary sources of noise. New HVAC installations should be sited away from neighboring windows and property lines. Sound barriers, vibration isolators, and noise-reducing equipment mountings help achieve compliance. The Department of Public Health Environmental Health Division handles complaints about persistent mechanical equipment noise.
Exceeding noise standards is a misdemeanor under Section 12.08.590, with fines up to $1,000. Property owners may be ordered to abate the noise source through modifications, relocation, or equipment replacement.
