Rancho Cordova lies directly adjacent to Mather Airport, a former Air Force Base now operated by Sacramento County as a cargo and general aviation facility. Aircraft noise is preempted by federal FAA regulations, but the city participates in the Mather Airport Land Use Compatibility Plan.
Mather Airport (MHR) operates on the eastern edge of Rancho Cordova. Federal law (49 USC Section 40103) preempts local regulation of aircraft in flight, so the city cannot set aircraft noise limits. Instead, Rancho Cordova uses land use controls through the Sacramento County Airport Land Use Commission (ALUC) Compatibility Plan, which requires avigation easements, sound insulation in new residential construction within the 60 dB CNEL contour, and disclosures to buyers. Cargo operations (UPS, FedEx, Amazon Air) generate nighttime departures. Noise complaints are routed to the Mather Airport Noise Office.
