Greenwood, IN Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Section 6-277 of the Greenwood General Ordinances bans loud, raucous, unreasonable or disturbing noise citywide and declares it a public Nuisance, placing a duty on every owner, occupant, manager, agent or operator to stop people under their control from violating the section. Subsection (b) lists sound-reproducing equipment specifically: playing or operating a machine or device for reproducing sound so it disturbs the peace, quiet and comfort of neighbors, or louder than needed for a voluntary listener in the same room, vehicle or property, is prohibited under Section 6-277(b)(1), and operating any sound device for commercial advertising or to attract attention that carries onto other properties, including the public right-of-way, is banned outright under Section 6-277(b)(2).

Sound equipment on public right-of-way next to an operating school, college, church or court that interferes with the institution, or next to a hospital that disturbs patients, is separately prohibited, and any sound device on public property is unlawful if it is audible thirty feet from its source. Exemptions cover properly muffled lawn equipment and construction tools between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., sanctioned parades and sporting events, and holiday celebrations between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., extended to 10:00 p.m. on Halloween, 11:00 p.m. on Independence Day, and 1:00 a.m. on New Year's Day. A person may apply to the Board of Public Works and Safety for a discretionary waiver specifying the property, date and hours it covers.
