Greenwood, IN Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Greenwood General Ordinances Sec. 6-277(a) makes it unlawful in the City of Greenwood, Indiana to create any loud, raucous, improper, unreasonable, offensive, or unusual noise that disturbs the comfort, repose, health, peace, or safety of others, and it is declared a public nuisance. Section 6-277(c) exempts certain sources from that general ban, but only within stated hours. Under Sec. 6-277(c)(2), lawn mowers, garden tractors, similar home power tools, and commercial construction equipment are exempt from the noise ordinance only when properly muffled and operated between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Run that equipment before 7:00 a.m. or after 9:00 p.m. and the exemption no longer applies, so the noise falls back under the general prohibited-noise standard in Sec. 6-277(a). A contractor who needs to work outside those hours can apply to the Board of Public Works and Safety for a discretionary waiver under Sec. 6-277(d), which must specify the property, date, and hours covered. Enforcement runs through the Greenwood Police Department, City Code Enforcement officers, and designated Park employees, who may issue citations under Sec.

6-277(e)(6). First offenses in a calendar year are handled by the Ordinance Violations Bureau; second and later offenses in the same year go to the Greenwood City Court under Sec. 6-277(e)(3)-(4). Each day a violation continues counts as a separate offense under Sec. 6-277(e)(2).
