Amplified music rules in Long Beach, CA β also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances β set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Amplified music in Long Beach is regulated under LBMC Ch. 8.80. Noise that exceeds established decibel levels for the zone is prohibited. Nightclubs and bars with amplified music face additional sound attenuation requirements.
Under LBMC 8.80.200, using or operating for any purpose any loudspeaker, loudspeaker system, or similar device between the hours of 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM the following day, such that the sound therefrom creates a noise disturbance across a residential real property line, is prohibited. Per LBMC 8.80.160, if the alleged offensive noise contains music or speech conveying informational content, the standard exterior noise limits in Table A are reduced by 5 decibels as a correction for character of sound. The same 5 dB reduction applies to interior noise limits under LBMC 8.80.180. During daytime hours, amplified music must comply with residential exterior limits of 50 dBA (L50) minus the 5 dB correction, effectively making the limit 45 dBA during daytime and 40 dBA at night for music specifically.
Violations are misdemeanors punishable by fines up to $500, imprisonment up to 180 days, or both per LBMC 8.80. The LBPD handles complaints about loud music; for non-emergency noise disturbances call (562) 435-6711.
