Castle Rock, CO Noise Ordinances: Barking Dogs (2026)

Section 6.02.110 of the Castle Rock Municipal Code, titled Noisy Dogs, sets a measurable barking standard. Each part of the sentence does its own work.

Keeping. The offense is keeping a dog that makes the noise. Responsibility under 6.02.110 follows the keeping of the dog on the premises.

Kinds of noise. The section lists barking, howling, whining and yelping, then adds any other utterance. Whining counts the same as barking in Castle Rock.

More than a single dog. The noise can come from a dog individually or in combination with another dog or dogs kept on the same premises. Dogs kept together on a Castle Rock property are counted together, so noise shared among them still adds up toward the limit.

Heard off the property. The noise must be plainly audible beyond the premises on which the animal is kept. The quoted text sets no decibel level. The test is whether the sound can be plainly heard past the property where the dog lives.

Duration. The noise must last for a consecutive period in excess of ten (10) minutes. Both words matter. The period must be consecutive, and it must exceed 10 minutes, so noise that reaches the 10 minute mark and continues is what 6.02.110 prohibits.

Time of day. The standard applies at any time during the day or night. Castle Rock does not set separate quiet hours for dogs in this section, so the same 10 minute limit applies in the afternoon and after dark.

This is a home-rule Town ordinance. Douglas County rules do not apply inside Castle Rock town limits.
