Piscataway, NJ Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

Section 3-2.2.h treats excavation, demolition, construction, repair or alteration work outside its permitted hours as an unlawful noise. On weekdays the window runs 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; on Saturdays it runs 8 a.m. until either 6 p.m. or sundown, whichever is later; and on Sundays it runs 9 a.m. until either 6 p.m. or sundown, whichever is later. The Township carves out a broader exception for a homeowner doing construction, repair or alteration work on their own dwelling, extending that permitted window to 7 a.m. through 9 p.m.

For genuine urgent necessity or public health and safety needs, the Construction Official may grant a permit allowing excavation, demolition, construction, repair or alteration work outside those hours, but that emergency permit is capped at three days and can only authorize work between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., not an open-ended extension. Piscataway Police Officers enforce the hours restriction under § 3-2.4, and where an officer takes a sound-level reading rather than simply timing the work, § 3-2.5 requires following N.J.A.C. 7:29-2 measurement procedures. The current civil-penalty enforcement structure, including the enforcement-document requirement in § 3-2.7.b, was added by the December 2025 amendment, Ordinance No. 2025-28, replacing the Township's earlier noise-penalty scheme for this and every other subsection of § 3-2.2.
