Piscataway, NJ Noise Ordinances: Quiet Hours (2026)

Piscataway's noise ordinance layers extra nighttime restrictions on top of its general noise ban. Section 3-2.2.c targets yelling, shouting, hooting, whistling or singing on public streets, calling out specifically the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. window as the period when such sounds are most likely to annoy or disturb people in nearby offices, dwellings, hotels, motels or other residences, though the section also reaches disturbances at any hour or place. Section 3-2.2.j addresses heavy equipment rather than human voices: operating a pile driver, steam shovel, pneumatic hammer, derrick, or steam or electric hoist, or any similar appliance whose use is attended by loud or unusual noise, between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. is separately unlawful, one hour earlier in the evening than the yelling curfew.

Together with the construction-hours limit in § 3-2.2.h, these provisions push the loudest categories of activity, human noise, heavy machinery, and building work, out of the late-night and pre-dawn hours across the Township. Piscataway Police Officers enforce both subsections under § 3-2.4, and where a sound-level measurement rather than a plain observation is needed, § 3-2.5 requires the officer to follow the procedures in N.J.A.C. 7:29-2. The December 2025 amendment, Ordinance No. 2025-28, applied the current civil-penalty structure and enforcement-document requirement uniformly across every unlawful-noise category in § 3-2.2, including these two nighttime provisions.
