Full Breakdown

City of Sarasota Code § 20-4(a)(2)d makes it unlawful to run construction, drilling, demolition, land-clearing or landfilling equipment between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on weekdays, or between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on weekends and holidays. The only exceptions are emergency work by a public utility or activity covered by a city-approved permit. Section 20-7(5) separately exempts construction that runs 6:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. weekdays or 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. weekends/holidays when required permits are in hand and equipment mufflers meet manufacturer spec. Violations go to the code compliance special magistrate, not criminal court.

Violations & Fines

First offense $250 if uncontested (up to $1,000 if contested); repeat violations within 12 months climb to $1,000-$5,000, with irreparable-harm fines reaching $15,000 under Sec. 20-9.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run a jackhammer at 7 a.m. on a Saturday in Sarasota?
No. Weekend construction noise is barred until 9:00 a.m. under Sec. 20-4(a)(2)d; work before then risks a code compliance citation unless it's emergency utility repair.
Is there any way to get an exception?
Yes. Sec. 20-6 lets the city manager issue a temporary special permit for specific dates/conditions, and Sec. 20-7(5) exempts permitted daytime construction outright.
