Rockdale County, GA Noise Ordinances: Decibel Limits (2026)

Rockdale County's general noise ordinance, Section 42-1, mostly bans sound that is 'plainly audible' beyond a property line rather than setting a decibel-meter reading, but two supplemental use standards in Section 218-13 of the Unified Development Ordinance do set hard numeric decibel thresholds. Section 218-13(w), covering 'Farming, general,' requires that 'all structures, buildings or enclosed areas used for the operation shall be a minimum of 100 feet from all property lines,' and that 'equipment producing noise or sound in excess of 70 decibels shall be located no closer than 100 feet to the nearest residence,' a threshold that also appears in the county's organic farming standard for the W-P watershed protection district at Section 206-1(b).

' The shooting range standard also requires baffling or bullet-resistant walls, ceilings, and floors so gunfire cannot reach outside the structure, plus a ventilation system meeting Environmental Protection Agency standards. Neither threshold applies county-wide; each is tied to the specific land use it regulates, and both operate as conditions of the special use permit the Department of Planning and Development reviews before the use may begin operating.
