Quiet hours in Leander, TX โ also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time โ define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Leander's noise ordinance (Article 8.04, adopted Feb. 2024) sets a nighttime 'night' window of 10:01 p.m. to 6:59 a.m. with lower sound caps, and treats amplified sound as a noise disturbance per se from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weeknights and 11:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekends.
The City of Leander rewrote its noise rules in February 2024 (Ordinance No. 24-017-00), replacing the old subjective standard with objective decibel limits in Chapter 8, Article 8.04 of the Code of Ordinances. The ordinance defines 'Day' as 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 'Night' as 10:01 p.m. to 6:59 a.m. Maximum allowed sound levels drop at night for every zoning district: residential falls from 65 dBA (day) to 55 dBA (night), commercial/mixed-use from 70 to 60 dBA, and industrial from 75 to 65 dBA, each measured at the property line. Separately, Section 8.04.002(c) makes playing radios, instruments, loudspeakers and similar sound-reproduction devices a 'noise disturbance per se' if done between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and between 11:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. There is no blanket curfew on all activity, but during these hours amplified or reproduced sound that crosses the property line is presumptively unlawful. Code enforcement officers and police may issue citations to the 'responsible party' (homeowner, contractor, or on-site supervisor).
Amplified or reproduced sound at the property line during the per-se quiet-hour windows, or any sound exceeding the nighttime district caps (55 dBA residential, 60 dBA commercial, 65 dBA industrial), can be cited. Penalties follow the general penalty in Section 1.01.009 of the Code; under Texas Local Government Code 54.001 a municipal fine generally may not exceed $500 (up to $2,000 for health-and-safety categories).
