Bayonne, NJ Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Under § 3-1.8.b.6 of the Bayonne noise ordinance, "Vehicular Music Amplification" splits into two standards. At night, from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., no personal or commercial vehicle sound system may be plainly audible at a residential property line anywhere in the City. During the day, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., a personal vehicle stereo may not be plainly audible at a distance of 50 feet in any direction from the operator. The identical two-tier standard is repeated as a "nuisance noise type" at § 3-1.10.e and § 3-1.10.f, which lets the Bayonne Police Department, not just the designated Noise Control Officer, issue the citation.

Enforcement follows § 3-1.9: an enforcement document goes to the violator under N.J.A.C. 7:29-1.6 procedures, and the recipient is entitled to a hearing in Bayonne Municipal Court to contest it. A conviction carries the general penalty fixed at Chapter 1, § 1-5: up to a $1,250 fine, up to 90 days in the county jail, or up to 90 days of community service, with a $100 minimum fine where the Council has set one. If the noise continues, § 3-1.9.b makes each day of the violation a separate, additional offense, so a stereo left blasting overnight can generate more than one citation.
