Bayonne, NJ Noise Ordinances: Construction Hours (2026)

City Code § 3-1.8b(3) bars construction and demolition activity, other than emergency work or work the Municipal Council expressly approves, between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays, unless the activity can meet the Table I and Table II decibel limits at § 3-1.6 and § 3-1.7. Construction and demolition is barred entirely on Sundays and federal holidays. Blasting activity carries a narrower window still: it cannot occur between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and is barred on Sundays altogether unless the Municipal Council expressly permits it.

All motorized equipment used in construction, demolition, or blasting must be operated with a muffler. Outside the restricted hours, the Table I/II decibel ceilings do not apply to this category, so daytime construction noise has no numeric cap. This provision was amended by Ord. No. O-19-17 on March 20, 2019. Enforcement runs through the Noise Control Officer or Police Department under § 3-1.9 and § 3-1.10, with a hearing available in Bayonne Municipal Court; conviction carries the Chapter 1 § 1-5 penalty of up to $1,250 or 90 days, and each day the work continues outside permitted hours is a separate offense under § 1-5.5.
