Clayton County prohibits loud vehicle exhaust, unnecessary horn use and rattling loads. Modified or special exhaust devices that increase or change a vehicle's sound are banned, and horns may be used only as a danger warning.
Clayton County's noise ordinance lists several vehicle-related violations in § 62-3.3. Subsection (6) requires that engine and motor exhaust discharge through a muffler that effectively prevents loud or explosive noise and prohibits special or modified exhaust devices that increase or modify a vehicle's sound. Subsection (1) bars sounding a horn or signaling device except as a danger warning, plus prolonged or engine-exhaust whistles. Subsection (7) covers vehicles so out of repair or loaded as to create loud grating, grinding or rattling noise. These join the general § 62-3.2 rule against any loud, unnecessary noise audible 50 feet from its origin. Georgia state law (O.C.G.A. § 40-8-71) also requires an adequate muffler.
Vehicle noise violations are misdemeanors under Code § 1-12: a fine not exceeding $1,000.00 or six months imprisonment, or both, and may also draw a state muffler citation.
