Hesperia, CA Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

California Vehicle Code 27150 requires every motor vehicle subject to registration to be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent excessive or unusual noise. Cutouts, bypasses, and similar devices are prohibited (narrow exception for sanctioned off-highway racing events). CVC 27151 prohibits modifying the exhaust system to amplify or increase noise beyond CVC 27150 limits or the Article 2.5 type-specific limits. For vehicles with manufacturer GVWR under 6,000 lb (other than motorcycles), a sound level of 95 dBA or less measured per the current SAE International standard complies. Hesperia is patrolled by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department (Hesperia Station) for traffic enforcement; loud-exhaust citations are typically issued as 'fix-it' tickets with a Bureau of Automotive Repair Referee inspection required. Off-Highway Vehicle use in unincorporated Mojave Desert areas is separately governed by CVC 38280 (spark arrester) and Hesperia's own Off-Road Vehicle posted violation type. Local Hesperia Code Chapter 8.32 nuisance provisions also reach stationary vehicle noise - revving, idling, sound systems - that disturbs the peace.
