Walnut Creek, CA Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Walnut Creek enforces vehicle noise through a combination of local and state law. California Vehicle Code Section 27150 requires every motor vehicle to be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation, and Section 27151 prohibits modifications that amplify or increase exhaust noise beyond factory specifications. Locally, Chapter 4-3 prohibits unnecessary vehicle noises including racing engines, prolonged idling near residences, squealing tires, and loud stereo systems audible more than 50 feet from the vehicle. Motorcycles are a frequent target of enforcement, particularly along South Main Street, Ygnacio Valley Road, and the Iron Horse Trail corridor. Diesel trucks idling more than 5 minutes in residential areas violate both state ARB anti-idling rules and local nuisance-noise provisions. Delivery vehicles in residential zones are restricted from operating before 7:00 AM. WCPD can refer noisy vehicles for CHP referee inspection under the state's vehicle noise referee program, which can result in a correction notice requiring the owner to restore the original exhaust configuration.
