Barbecue grills are allowed without a permit if used only for cooking food, with a grate over the fire and only approved materials burned. Propane and gas grills stay legal even during a countywide burn ban, provided a responsible adult attends them at all times.
Manatee/West Manatee Fire Rescue rules allow a barbecue grill fire 'if used solely for the preparation of food, provided that a grate is maintained over the fire, excessive visible emissions are not generated, and only approved materials (per Rule 62-256, FAC) are burned.' No burn notification is required for BBQ grills. When the county declares a drought burn ban, 'outdoor cookers or grills' remain allowed if 'attended at all times by a responsible adult,' and LP-gas, natural-gas, and butane grills are expressly exempt. Multifamily and condo grill placement may follow additional Florida Fire Prevention Code (NFPA 1) setback rules from combustible structures.
Leaving a grill unattended during a burn ban, or using it for non-cooking open burning, can bring fire-district and code-enforcement action.
