Devices that burn wood or other solid fuel, including wood- or charcoal-fired smokers used as a fire feature, fall under § 307.6.2: permanent installations must meet California Building Code clearance standards, and burning wood or solid fuel in any device is barred within 25 feet of a combustible structure unless it's inside an approved permanent fireplace, with narrower exceptions of 3 feet at single-family (R-3) lots and 15 feet at other residential occupancies for portable units equipped with a spark arrester.
