San Diego County has a real dark-sky ordinance, the Light Pollution Code, to protect the Palomar and Mount Laguna observatories. Bostonia sits in Zone B (outside the 15-mile observatory radius), where outdoor lighting installed after Jan. 1, 1985 must be shielded and low-glare, though Zone B limits are less strict
Because Bostonia is unincorporated, it is covered by the County Code of Regulatory Ordinances Light Pollution Code (Sec. 51.201 et seq.). The Code divides the County into Zone A (within a 15-mile radius of Palomar and Mount Laguna observatories) and Zone B (everywhere else, including Bostonia). Its purpose is to minimize light pollution so residents can enjoy the night sky and to protect astronomical research at the observatories. All artificial outdoor luminaires installed or reinstalled after January 1, 1985 must comply, using shielded, low-pressure or otherwise controlled fixtures. Zone A imposes stricter lamp-type and curfew limits; Zone B still requires shielding to reduce sky glow.
Non-conforming outdoor lighting is a code violation abatable by the County; owners may be required to shield or replace fixtures.
