Renton, WA Outdoor Lighting: Light Trespass (2026)

Renton Municipal Code 4-4-075 specifies that outdoor lighting on non-residential, multifamily, and mixed-use sites must be shielded and aimed so that light trespass onto adjacent residential properties does not exceed approximately 0.5 foot-candles at the property line. Overly bright security lighting that shines directly into neighbors windows can also be addressed under the general nuisance provisions of Renton Municipal Code Title 1. Fixtures must be full cutoff or directed downward, and flood lights aimed horizontally toward neighboring lots are generally prohibited. Residential properties with excessive security lighting may be cited as a nuisance if they substantially interfere with the use and enjoyment of adjacent properties. Washington law also recognizes common-law nuisance remedies for chronic light pollution. Sports field lighting, car lot lighting, and billboard illumination have additional standards. Complaints should first be raised with the property owner; if unresolved, Renton Code Compliance at (425) 430-7373 can investigate and issue correction orders. Repeated violations carry escalating fines.
