Sunrise, FL Outdoor Lighting: Light Trespass & Shielding (2026)

Sunrise Land Development Code section 16-150(1)e limits lighting overspill onto neighboring parcels to 0.5 footcandles, measured on a vertical plane beginning 3 feet above grade at the property line. The cap does not apply along rights-of-way or where two nonresidential uses abut unless separated by a waterway. In multifamily developments the same 0.5-footcandle limit applies at the edge of buildings so that no light spills into bedrooms. Fixtures must also stay within the 25-foot height cap and the 12:1 maximum-to-minimum uniformity ratio. Because these standards sit in the site-development code, they apply chiefly to commercial and multifamily projects; single-family porch-light complaints fall under Sunrise's general nuisance rules.
