Buffalo removes abandoned vehicles under City Code Chapter 413 and NY V&T Law Section 1224. Vehicles left on streets over 96 hours or lacking current registration can be towed and impounded.
Buffalo considers a vehicle abandoned if left on a public street for more than 96 hours without being moved, lacking valid registration, inspection, or license plates, or parked in clear disrepair. Complaints can be filed through 311. The Parking Enforcement Bureau tags vehicles with a 72-hour warning before towing. Abandoned vehicles on private property can be reported to PIS for zoning enforcement. NY V&T Law Section 1224 governs disposal of abandoned vehicles. Owners have 20 days to reclaim from the impound lot by paying tow and storage fees; after that, vehicles are sold at auction or scrapped.
Abandoned vehicle: tow fee approximately 130 dollars plus 25 dollars per day storage. Failure to reclaim within 20 days: title transfer to city.
