LA County Code Chapter 15.80 governs abandoned and inoperative vehicles in unincorporated areas. Vehicles on public highways for 72+ hours may be towed. Inoperative vehicles visible from public areas on private property also violate the code.
LA County Code Chapter 15.80 defines an abandoned vehicle as one left on a public highway for 72 or more consecutive hours without moving. Section 15.64.200 authorizes the Sheriff to tag and remove such vehicles. On private property, Section 15.80.020 prohibits keeping inoperative or abandoned vehicles that are visible from a public street or neighboring property in residential and commercial zones. Vehicles must be currently registered, operable, and not stripped of parts. Exceptions exist for vehicles in fully enclosed garages or behind opaque fencing. Residents can report abandoned vehicles to the LA County Sheriff's Parking Enforcement Detail or by calling 211. The process typically involves a 72-hour notice tag before towing.
Abandoned vehicles on public roads are towed at owner's expense plus daily storage fees (approximately $40β$60/day). Private property violations may result in administrative citations of $100 first offense, escalating to $500 for subsequent offenses. County may abate at owner's cost.
