Burlington, NC Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 36-151 of the Burlington City Code limits how long oversize vehicles can occupy public streets. Subsection (a) bars parking any vehicle wider than ninety-six inches on a city street for a continuous period longer than thirty minutes. Subsection (b) separately targets buses, trucks, tractor-trailers, any motor vehicle towing a trailer, mobile homes, and any vehicle longer than twenty-two feet: those cannot stay parked on a public street in a business section for more than fifteen minutes, or in a residential district for more than sixty minutes.

Subsection (c) exempts vehicles that are only momentarily stopped to pick up or drop off passengers or freight at their actual origin or destination, and vehicles accidentally and unavoidably disabled while emergency repairs are made to get them moving again. The rule sits inside Article VI, Division 1 alongside Burlington's other stopping and parking provisions, so the chapter-wide civil enforcement scheme applies: Section 36-168 treats a violation as a civil parking matter under G.S. 160A-175 rather than a criminal infraction under G.S. 14-4, and Section 36-167.1 gives the owner fourteen days from the notice of violation to pay the fee-schedule penalty to the collections division at the city annex, 237 West Maple Avenue, before a $50 late fee applies.
