Carmel City Code Sec. 6-109 bars commercial vehicles over 20 feet, and any semi-tractor, semi-trailer, trailer or construction vehicle of any size, from parking in residential districts more than four hours unless actively performing a service. Smaller commercial vehicles (20 ft or under) are limited to one per family, on the driveway or in the garage.
Carmel strictly limits commercial and construction vehicles in residential districts under Section 6-109 (Parking and Storage of Construction and Commercial Vehicles Prohibited). No commercial vehicle with an overall length over 20 feet, and no semi-tractor, semi-tractor-trailer, semi-trailer, trailer or construction vehicle of any length or weight, may park on any public or private property, or on a right-of-way abutting such property, in a residential district for more than four hours, unless temporarily parked during the actual performance of a bona fide commercial service, construction, sales or delivery to that property. A commercial vehicle that is not a semi or construction vehicle and is 20 feet or less may be parked or stored outside on private property in a residential district, but only one such vehicle per family may be kept on a lot, it must be parked only on the driveway or in the garage, and it must belong to an owner or occupant of the premises and comply with off-street parking requirements. Separately, Section 8-46 prohibits any freight-carrying vehicle of one-ton capacity or more, or any vehicle over 20 feet long, from parking on a City street except while loading or unloading. These provisions keep large work vehicles, semis and construction equipment out of residential neighborhoods.
Parking a semi, trailer or oversized commercial vehicle in a residential district beyond four hours, or keeping more than one qualifying commercial vehicle per family, is a violation enforced by Carmel code enforcement and police.
