San Leandro prohibits commercial vehicles exceeding 20 feet in length, 7 feet in height/width, or 10,000 lbs GVWR from parking on any residential-district street, except for up to 2 hours for active pickups, deliveries, or construction/repair work.
San Leandro Municipal Code (SLMC) Section 6-1-430 governs commercial vehicle parking in residential areas. No commercial vehicle or combination of vehicles exceeding 20 feet in length, 7 feet or more in height, 7 feet or more in width, or having a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more may be parked or left standing upon any street in any Residence District, except for a reasonable time not exceeding 2 hours when actively engaged in pickups or deliveries of goods, wares, and merchandise, or delivering materials for repair, alteration, remodeling, or construction. SLMC Section 3-1-200(h)(5) further classifies the storage of such oversized commercial vehicles where visible from a public street, alley, or neighboring property as a public nuisance subject to administrative abatement. The City's pending Summer 2025 Code Amendments Package, prepared by staff and presented to City Council, would expand the citywide 2-hour limit to all public streets, highways, alleys, and public lots, and would redefine 'Oversized Vehicle' to capture vehicles or combinations exceeding 22 feet in length, 6 feet in width, or 7 feet in height — explicitly including semi-trucks, fifth wheels, and large trailers. Off-street commercial vehicle storage in residential zones is also constrained by Chapter 4.08 (Off-Street Parking and Loading Regulations), which dictates that commercial vehicles generally must be stored in zones permitting commercial uses.
The San Leandro Police Department Traffic Division enforces SLMC 6-1-430. An off-street oversized vehicle violation under SLMC 6-1-430(d) carries a $156 base fine per citation. Repeat or nuisance-level violations under SLMC 3-1-200 are referred to Code Enforcement and may be abated under the administrative enforcement procedures of SLMC Chapter 1-12, which can include additional fines and lien recovery of abatement costs.
