Champaign, IL Parking Rules: Curb Color Rules (2026)

Section 33-53, Prohibited in specified places, is Champaign's master list of where on-street parking is banned outright, from intersections and crosswalks to within 15 feet of a fire hydrant and within 5 feet of a driveway. Subsection (a)(14) folds curb color into that scheme, recognizing yellow-painted curbing or other street markings as valid notice of a parking prohibition, but only for locations the City itself has designated. Subsection (c) then locks down who may create that yellow marking in the first place: no person may paint or otherwise mark a curb with yellow paint or other yellow markings to indicate that parking is prohibited unless specifically authorized by the City Manager or the Director of Public Works.

That two-part structure means a homeowner or business cannot legally paint their own curb yellow to keep parking away from their driveway or storefront; only City-ordered yellow curbing carries legal weight, and unauthorized painting is itself a Code violation. The section derives from Code 1975 Section 22-109 and has been amended repeatedly since 1982, most recently in 1999, reflecting the City's continuing effort to standardize curb markings under Public Works control rather than leaving it to private property owners or businesses to mark up City streets on their own initiative.
