Champaign, IL Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 33-54, Manner of parking at curb, governs exactly how a vehicle must sit once stopped on a Champaign street. On a two-way roadway, the right-hand wheels must be parallel to and within 12 inches of the right-hand curb, or as close as practicable to the road edge where there is no curb. On a one-way roadway, the vehicle must park parallel to the curb in the direction of authorized traffic, with either its right-hand wheels within 12 inches of the right curb or its left-hand wheels within 12 inches of the left curb, whichever side legal parking is permitted.

Where a street has been marked for angle parking, subsection (c) requires vehicles to park at the marked angle, and subsection (d) bars parking across or outside any painted parking-space lines. These curb-hugging and alignment rules exist to keep travel lanes clear and are cross-referenced to the Illinois Vehicle Code's own parallel-parking standard, 625 ILCS 5/11-1304. Separately, Section 33-53(a)(15), part of the City's list of places parking is flatly prohibited, bars parking within five feet of the edge of a driveway or in any spot that would block the driveway's use, protecting a resident's or business's ability to enter and exit their own property regardless of how a vehicle is otherwise aligned to the curb.
