Norman, OK Parking Rules: Curb Color Rules (2026)

NCC 32-101 defines a fire lane and sets the physical standards behind the red paint drivers see across Norman parking lots and access drives. Fire lanes must be at least 20 feet wide and located no closer than 10 feet from any structure. Where there is a curb, it must be painted red; where there is no curb, a four-inch red stripe goes on the roadway instead, and the Fire Chief or a designee can require additional red pavement markings to show the lane's width. Signs reading NO PARKING FIRE LANE, 12 inches by 18 inches, mark the lane's beginning and end for lanes 150 feet or shorter; longer lanes add a middle sign between 150 and 300 feet, and signs every 150 feet beyond 300 feet, each mounted with at least seven feet of clearance to its bottom edge. Fire lanes cannot sit farther than 50 feet from an exterior wall on a one- or two-story building, 40 feet on a three-story building, or 30 feet on a building over four stories. The Fire Chief or designee must approve every fire lane; marking one without that approval is itself a Code violation.

Yellow paint carries a separate meaning under NCC 32-707: parking, stopping, or standing a vehicle adjacent to a yellow-painted curb is prohibited outright, alongside the section's other curb-based restrictions such as bus stops, taxicab stands, and curb loading zones.
