Walker County, GA Parking Rules: Curb Color Rules (2026)

Section 18-143 of the Walker County Code, part of chapter 18's Fire Lane article, gives the Fire Official authority over how fire lanes are marked, not just where they run. Subsection (e) lets the Fire Official require painted lines, or an equivalent marking, for any part of a fire lane inside a parking area or subject to being blocked by parked vehicles; those lines must be yellow and clearly mark a 20-foot clear width from the building as a no-parking fire lane. Subsection (f) goes further, letting the Fire Official require curbs of non-parking areas to be painted red or another distinctive color, giving the county a way to flag no-parking zones beyond the immediate fire lane striping.

These color requirements sit alongside the article's sign standards in the same section: No Parking Fire Lane signs in metal or similarly durable material, letters at least 2 inches tall, one sign at each end of a lane and another every 50 feet, mounted no more than 4 feet from the curb edge. Every fire lane, painted or signed, must still meet the 20-foot unobstructed width, 13-foot-6-inch vertical clearance, and load-bearing standards set earlier in section 18-143(a) and (b). Under section 18-148, a driver who disregards a properly placed sign or painted marking is presumed to have violated the law without the county needing to prove who erected the marking or under what authority, and enforcement runs through the same Enforcement Officers and citation process defined in section 18-142.
