In the City of Indio, residential vehicles must be parked on a driveway or other approved hard surface, never on grass, dirt, rocks, or pavers. The city's development code also sets minimum driveway widths and depths. Blocking a driveway on the street is prohibited under the California Vehicle Code.
Indio's driveway-parking standards come from its own code-enforcement rules and Unified Development Code (Title 17). The Indio Police Department Code Enforcement Division states that a vehicle may only be parked on a driveway or other approved parking surface, that vehicles in rear yards must be on an approved concrete surface, and that parking on grass, dirt, rocks, pavers, stones, and other non-approved surfaces is prohibited. Indio Municipal Code Section 71.08 likewise bars leaving a vehicle in any area that is not a driveway, parking lot, or approved parking surface. For new or modified driveways, Indio Municipal Code Section 3.03.08 (Parking Development and Design Standards) sets minimums: a driveway serving one residence must be at least 10 feet wide, a two-way driveway must be a minimum of 20 feet wide, and parking areas must provide adequate depth from the street (the code specifies minimum depth standards, including a 19-foot depth standard). On the street, blocking a driveway is prohibited by California Vehicle Code Section 22500(e), which Indio enforces. Because surface and dimension requirements are tied to zoning and the development code, homeowners adding a driveway or RV pad should confirm requirements with Indio Community Development before paving.
Parking a vehicle on grass, dirt, rocks, pavers, or other non-approved surfaces in a residential yard violates Indio's code-enforcement standards and Municipal Code 71.08, drawing notice and citation. Blocking a driveway from the street is a parking citation under California Vehicle Code 22500(e). Non-conforming new driveways violate development standards in Section 3.03.08.
