Lakeville requires residential parking to be on a surfaced driveway leading into a garage, plus one open surfaced space beside it. Driveways must be paved with asphalt, concrete, or paving brick, set back at least 5 feet from side lot lines, and no wider than 24 feet at the street.
Lakeville's Zoning Ordinance (Title 11, Chapter 19, Section 11-19-7) governs residential driveways and where vehicles may park. For single-family, two-family, townhouse, and quad dwellings, parking is prohibited on any portion of the front, side, or rear yard except on a driveway leading directly into a garage, or one open surfaced space located on the side of a driveway away from the principal structure. All driveways and parking stalls must be surfaced with asphalt, concrete, cobblestone, or paving brick, except certain single-family uses in permanent rural or urban-reserve areas that may have gravel access. The driveway access to the public street may not exceed 24 feet in width, must be set back at least 5 feet from the side lot line, and 40 to 50 feet from an intersecting street or corner lot. Vehicles stored outside must be parked on a hard surface; motor vehicles may not be parked on the grass. On the street side, City Code 6-1-1-3 prohibits parking that blocks access to a driveway or mailbox, protecting driveway access for residents.
Driveway and yard-parking violations are zoning-code matters enforced by Zoning Enforcement, generally starting with a written notice and a deadline to bring the property into compliance (for example, by paving or relocating vehicles) before further abatement. Parking on the grass or in an unpaved yard area, exceeding the 24-foot driveway width, or violating setbacks are typical violations. Blocking a driveway from the street is enforced separately under City Code 6-1-1-3.
