Pleasanton's zoning code keeps required off-street parking and recreational-vehicle storage out of the required front yard and corner-lot street-side yard. California Vehicle Code Section 22500 separately bars blocking any public or private driveway from the street side.
Pleasanton regulates driveway and front-yard parking primarily through its zoning code rather than a stand-alone driveway ordinance. The site-and-yard regulations provide that no off-street parking space required under Chapter 18.88 may be located in a required front yard or in a required side yard on the street side of a corner lot, and that trailers, campers, and boats may not be stored in those areas either. When recreational vehicles are kept between the front yard and the dwelling, they must be screened from street view. Off-street parking design standards in Chapter 18.88 govern driveway dimensions and the number and surfacing of required spaces for new development. On the street side, blocking a driveway is controlled by California Vehicle Code Section 22500, which prohibits stopping or parking in front of a public or private driveway; this state rule applies to driveway aprons and curb cuts throughout the city. Vehicles parked on a residential site also remain subject to the one-ton truck/bus limit and the 25-foot trailer limit. Homeowners planning to pave additional driveway area, park on unpaved surfaces, or store large vehicles in the front should confirm requirements with the Planning Division, since front-yard parking and surfacing can be restricted by the zoning standards.
Locating required parking or storing an RV/boat in a prohibited front or street-side yard is a zoning violation handled by code enforcement. Blocking a driveway from the street is enforced under CVC 22500 and may result in a citation and tow.
