In unincorporated Kane County, a driveway is the one yard location where you may routinely park. Noncommercial vehicles are permitted in a driveway, and any other approved parking must be on a gravel, asphalt or concrete surface that is contiguous to the main driveway accessed from the street (Sec. 15-2(o)).
Kane County's nuisance code (unincorporated) prohibits parking vehicles, boats, campers and trailers anywhere in a yard between the right-of-way and the residence, with two carve-outs: an area 'duly improved (meaning a gravel, asphalt or concrete area) for parking purposes,' and a driveway for noncommercial vehicles. The ordinance adds that 'Duly improved surfaces must be contiguous to the main driveway accessed from the street.' So an unpaved side-yard pad or a random gravel patch not connected to the driveway does not qualify. Cities regulate driveway width, aprons and surfacing through their own zoning.
Nuisance under Ch. 15; fine not to exceed $500, each day a separate offense (Sec. 15-6).
