Watsonville, CA Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Chapter 14-30 of the Watsonville Municipal Code bans parking and storage in required front yards, and Section 14-30.030 supplies the definition that decides where a vehicle is safe. An "off-street parking area" is the area, as required or limited by the zoning title, which is maintained with a paved surface in accordance with City improvement standards and is used or required for the parking of vehicles, trailers, or boats. The definition names a paved surface and nothing else.

The exception in Section 14-30.020 reaches back to that term. It protects a motor vehicle, motor home, trailer, or boat in full operational and running condition parked in any off-street parking area. Two tests apply together: the vehicle must run, and the ground under it must meet the paved, City-standard description. Airplanes, parts of vehicles, and building materials get no such exception beyond the building-permit allowance for materials used on the premises.

Section 14-30.010 gives the reasons the City Council printed for the chapter: fire hazard, nuisance per se, attractive nuisance to children, a traffic hazard from obscured vision of cross traffic at corners, loss of light and air for adjacent buildings, and lower property values.

Driveways carry a second rule in the City of Watsonville under Section 14-40.060. Corner parcels in districts that require front and street side setbacks must keep a clear vision triangle adjacent to driveways. The driveway vision triangle is the area formed by measuring fifteen (15') feet along the driveway and the street from the point of intersection and diagonally connecting the ends of the two lines. Nothing over thirty (30") inches in height may sit in it, though trees pruned at least eight (8') feet above the established grade of the curb are permitted.
