Georgetown Code Section 10.16.090 reserves spaces designated for electric vehicle charging for that purpose only. No vehicle may stop, stand or park in an EV charging space except to charge an electric vehicle, and only while it is actively charging; violators are subject to a fine.
Georgetown was an early adopter of EV-parking rules. Section 10.16.090 of the Code of Ordinances, added by a 2013 parking ordinance update, governs electric vehicle charging stations. The ordinance provides that no person shall stop, stand or park any vehicle in areas designated for electric vehicle charging for any purpose except for the charging of an electric vehicle, and that a vehicle is allowed in the space only while it is charging. Vehicles parked in those spaces without an electric vehicle, or while not actively charging, are subject to a fine. The city marks reserved charging spaces with signage; the original ordinance covered four charging stations in the public parking lot at Main and Ninth streets. This is a city-level rule specific to designated charging locations and is separate from accessible (disabled) parking, which is governed by the Texas Transportation Code statewide. Drivers using public charging spaces around downtown should also observe the general downtown time limits where posted.
Parking in a designated EV charging space without charging an electric vehicle is a code violation subject to a fine. Enforcement around downtown is handled by parking ambassadors and police; report misuse via askGTX or the non-emergency line at 512-930-3510.
