Renton, WA Parking Rules: EV Charging (2026)

Renton has adopted EV-ready and EV-capable parking requirements consistent with the Washington State Energy Code (WAC 51-11 and RCW 19.27A) for new multifamily and non-residential construction. Under RMC 4-4-080 and the state code, a percentage of parking spaces in new projects must be built with conduit, panel capacity, and in many cases the charger itself, to support future EV adoption. Residential EV charging installations require an electrical permit; for single-family homes this is typically handled by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries electrical inspection program, while commercial EVSE may be permitted through Renton CED. Public charging stations at city facilities and along commercial corridors follow the Washington State Electrical Code for accessibility and signage. Level 2 chargers at 240 volts are standard for residential use. ADA-accessible charging spaces are required for larger public installations.
