Boone County, IN Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Section 157.033(K)(5) of the Boone County Code requires uses that receive or transport goods in quantity by truck delivery to provide dedicated loading berths, separate from the parking spaces required elsewhere in the same section; § 157.033(A)(4) already bars counting loading-berth space toward a site's parking requirement. Every berth has to be built to a fixed footprint of a 12-foot by 45-foot loading space with a 14-foot height clearance, a dimension large enough for a standard delivery truck to pull in, load and clear the dock door.

Table 8, Loading Berth Requirements and Distance from Residential Uses, then ties the number of required berths and their setback from residential property to the size of the use: a retail, wholesale or warehouse use of 3,000 to 15,000 square feet needs one berth, with an additional berth for each further 15,000 square feet, and larger office buildings scale similarly by square footage. Loading areas also have to meet the general parking-area design rules in the same section: an all-weather paved surface, striping, and a Bufferyard G landscape buffer where the loading area abuts a street front or a residential use, heavier than the Bufferyard E required for ordinary parking.

The Area Plan Commission Director reviews berth counts and distances as part of the site's improvement location permit under § 157.140, and since Chapter 157 carries no loading-specific fine, a site built without the required berths or buffer defaults to the general penalty at § 10.99, up to $2,500 for a first violation and $7,500 for repeat violations.
