Kalamazoo, MI Parking Rules: Loading Zones (2026)

Section 36-178(A) gives the Traffic Engineer authority to determine where passenger and freight curb-loading zones sit on Kalamazoo streets and to post signs stating the hours each zone is restricted for loading. Section 36-178(B) then limits any passenger curb loading zone to expeditious loading or unloading of passengers only, and only for up to five minutes, during the hours the zone's signs are in effect; stopping there for any other purpose or for longer is a violation. Section 36-178(C) governs freight zones separately: stopping there is allowed only for expeditious unloading, delivery, pickup or loading of materials while the zone is in effect, though a driver may stop briefly to load or unload passengers if doing so does not block a materials-hauling vehicle that is waiting to use the zone.

A related rule, § 36-179, bars stopping at right angles to the curb to load or unload merchandise unless a sign specifically permits it. The City's general fine schedule at § 36-185 lists 'Loading zone' as its own violation category, carrying an initial fine of $20, rising to $40 after seven days, $50 after 14 days and $60 after 30 days unpaid, and enforcement runs through the same ticketing and Parking Violations Bureau process, under §§ 36-182 through 36-184, that governs every other on-street parking violation in the chapter.
